THIRTY-FIVE
BLEED FOR THIS
CITY WOLF
Luc
We ran.
We sprinted through nothingness for hours before I heard the distant sound of a single car driving. Thatâs how far out of civilization we were. I hope all the humans made it out safely and make it to some sort of safe haven soon. But theyâre on their own. Pyro and Silas are pretty fast for werewolves, so I didnât have to slow down too much, thankfully.
At the first signs of life, we stop so the guys can dress while we catch our breath. We havenât seen real life outside of that place in years. The few people that are out and about this early in the morning are the first real people we have seen in years. I mean people. Not unfortunate souls that somehow got trapped in a prison of slow death disguised as a school.
âWe should get something to eat and try to find a car,â Pyro says. âAnd find out where we are.â
The sun rose from behind us while making our break, so we ran westward. Thatâs all I know. Itâs woodsy here, and we have passed by a few houses in the past few miles. There is a sign for a rest stop in Morgantown up ahead in one mile.
Thank the gods.
We run along the quiet highway, and even the crisp morning air tastes better. Three cars pass us from the opposite direction, which is good. More signs of life.
The rest stop is exactly what I imagined. There is a public restroom, a picnic area, a parking lot, and some vending machines.
Being out of that hellish prison, the demon in me is still alive, but stronger after my first taste of blood just a few hours ago. New sensations build inside of me that were repressed all this time. Restrained. The fact I finally ate for the first time in three years helped break it all down. It feels good. But the smell of human flesh and blood makes my mouth water. Thatâs the concerning part.
Scanning the area, itâs not too busy at the rest stop. A few people stretching their legs and whatnot. A small family stretching by their minivan catches my attention, and the little hairs on the back of my neck rise. My fangs tingle and mouth waters.
Pyro fists the back of my jacket and pulls me backward. âDonât start that,â he warns. âYou can eat regular food for now. We canât risk exposure.â
It takes a moment to relax, but I know heâs right. But why should I go back to eating regular food now? I need blood to build myself back up. Doesnât he get that?
âYou had perfect self-control for three years. Another day wonât hurt you.â
I peel my eyes from the tempting family in front of me. Pyro directs me to the other available food source nearby. Itâs not even food. Up close, the vending machines look like garbage. I tap my knuckle against the glass, and my lip curls slightly at the colorful packages.
âWhatâs good
